Battle of Monmouth Commemoration, June 17, National Event
National Color Guard Commander Brooks Lyles, on June 17, joined Color Guardsmen from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and other states for a wreath laying and commemoration at Battle of Monmouth Weekend, held annually each June at the Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The Color Guard honored both the battle, fought on June 28, 1778, and General Von Steuben, the Drillmaster of Valley Forge, without whose disciplined instruction the Continental Army might have fared poorly. The effects of Von Steuben’s training, instituted during the winter encampment at Valley Forge, are said to have first been seen on a significant scale at the Battle of Monmouth.
